General:
They have a gentle, fairly quite disposition, and are a joy to be around. They can learn to speak a few words but it is there pleasing personality that makes them a great companion parrot. Environment: Pionus parrots originate from Central and South America. There are 8 species, but only 5 species are commonly kept in the United States. These include the Blue Headed (Pionus menstruus, White Capped (P.senillis), Maxmilian (P.maxmiliani), Dusky (P.fuscus) and Bronze Winged (P. chalcopterus). The Coral-Billed Pionus Parrot (P.sordidus) is not commonly kept, therefore is not listed as a companion parrot most of the time. Diet: A nutritionally balanced diet for Pionus consist of fresh fruits, vegetables, a high quality seed mix, and commercial parrot pellets. Replenishing clean drinking water twice daily or any time water has been contaminated is a necessary step in maintaining a healthy parrot. Foods rich in Vitamin A such as cooked sweet potato are highly recommended. Check out the fresh foods you should be feeding your parrot on our fresh food list. Breeding: Mature females are ready for breeding at 4 to 5 years of age. Females will lay up to five eggs. Incubation is about 26 days. Chicks can be pulled from the nest for handfeeding at 2 to 3 weeks of age. Chicks will be ready to wean at approximately 3 to 4 months old. Captivity: Pionus parrots are sometimes overlooked because of the other colorful companion parrots to choose from. In our experience in having Pionus, we have discovered that they are truly the perfect parrot for those looking for a more reserved, low maintenance, independent, sweet bird. When choosing a bird cage, we highly recommend purchasing an acrylic cage for your bird to be housed in. They are a practical and gorgeous addition to any bird lover home. Pionus are quieter than other parrots and are recommended for those wanting a small to medium size parrot, and those living in an apartment with close neighbors that would not tolerate loud parrot callings. |
