    Eclectus Parrots

    General:
The elegant Eclectus parrot is best known for its beautiful color. Unlike
other parrots, the Eclectus is sexually dimorphic, meaning there is a
systematic difference in form (color) between individuals of different sex in
    the same species.

The male Eclectus is bright green with blue on the wings and tail, the
female is bright red with blue markings on the breast. There are ten
subspecies of Eclectus ranging in different sizes. In Parrots of the World,
Forshaw recognizes these 10 subspecies. These are the Grand,
    Vosmaer's, Solomon Islands, Westerman's,Cornelia's Riedel's or
Tanimbar, Red-sided, Biaki, Aruensis, and the Macgillivray's or Australian.

    Environment:
The Eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) originates from the Solomon
Islands, New Guinea, northeastern Australia and the Maluku Islands
    (Moluccas).

    Diet:
Eclectus parrots have a much longer digestive tract than other parrots,
therefore Eclectus parrots have a higher requirement for fresh fruits,
vegetables, and other healthy soft foods that contain a high fiber content.

An ideal diet would consist of fresh watermelon, pomegranate which is a
favorite, cantaloupe, mango, pears, banana's, kiwi, boiled eggs, hot
peppers, corn on the cob, and other nutritious soft foods. Replenishing
clean drinking water daily or any time water has been contaminated is a
necessary step to maintaining a healthy parrot.

Eclectus are often deficient in vitamin A, cooking a fresh sweet potato is
packed with vitamins! Check out  the fresh foods you should be feeding
your parrot on our fresh food list.

    Breeding:
Eclectus parrots that have found an acceptable, bonding mate will
generally start nesting between 2 and 5 years of age, depending on the
subspecies. Eclectus will breed all year long laying on average, two eggs,
sometimes three. Incubation is for 28 days. As with all breeder pairs,
Eclectus should be given rest periods throughout the breeding year to
maintain a healthy life and lower the risk of problems with excessive
    breeding.

Hatchlings will be small and it is best to leave them with their parents for 2
to 3 weeks. This will give them the best boost for a healthy life before
human handlers remove them from the nest for handfeeding.

It is recommended to consult your avian veterinarian about which type of
handfeeding formula to feed this species. Chicks are sometimes difficult to
feed and should be handfed only by those fully educated and
experienced. Chicks will be ready to wean at approximately four to five
    months of age.

    Captivity:
Eclectus parrots are sweet and gentle in nature and will eagerly adjust to a
loving home. They prefer a calm environment with a suitable cage for
hanging two to four safe parrot toys. We highly recommend purchasing an
acrylic cage for your bird to be housed in.

Eclectus are capable of speaking many words and using them in a very
cognitive way. They have precious, little girl voices that will melt your heart.
For those looking for an extraordinary unique companion parrot, the
    Eclectus may be for you.
