    Amazons

    General:
The amazing amazon is a bold beauty. Amazon parrots are mainly green
with beautiful colorations in the cheeks, crown, nape, and shoulders.
Amazons are known for their excellent talking and singing ability, resulting
in a very human-like voice. They are extremely intelligent birds and are
known for being a parrot of independence, not constantly demanding to be
    cuddled.

    Environment:
Amazon parrots originate from South and Central America, and a few
Caribbean Islands. There are approximately 27 species, and many
subspecies. Their sizes range from 10 to 16 inches.

    Diet:
A balanced diet is crucial for a bright and healthy amazon. They are prone
to Vitamin A deficiencies so feeding your bird nutritious foods such as
cooked sweet potato, carrots, dark leafy vegetables, beets, and mango will
greatly improve their health and give them a longer lifespan. Check out the
fresh foods you should be feeding your parrot on our fresh food list.

Obesity is common in the amazon species and should be carefully
regulated by offering a greater amount of fresh foods and less parrot
seed. Replenishing clean drinking water twice daily or any time water has
been contaminated is a necessary step to maintaining a healthy parrot.

    Breeding:
The breeding season for amazon parrots typically starts in spring (April or
May) and continues through the summer. Sexual maturity for most is
between 4 and 5 years of age. The female will lay between two and four
eggs, incubating them for an average of 26 to 28 days.

Chicks can be pulled from the nest for handfeeding at 2 to 3 weeks.
Allowing the parents to initially feed the baby will ensure they are receiving
the healthy, live bacillus needed for a strong start at life.

    Captivity:
The amazon will do very well in captivity if given the proper diet, housing,
and social needs. Amazon parrots love their human mates. They can make
amazing pets for an individual or family.

One interesting trait amazons have is the musky odor they produce. To
keep feathers bright, clean, and healthy a shower or mist should be given
to them daily. This is a necessity for an enriching quality of life.

It is not recommended to allow your amazon to perch on your shoulder.
This species tends to show increased signs of sexual and mating
aggression, which shoulder perching could invite this behavior. This
behavior can increase at sexual maturity, around four years of age.

Amazon parrots should be housed in a spacious cage, with plenty of room
for their wings to spread out. The bird cage should be kept in an area
where the family spends the most time, usually the living or dining room.
We highly recommend purchasing an acrylic cage or your bird to be
    housed in.
